Report from African Tails
(African Tails does great work in Cape Town, and since they do sterilisation work, in my opinion the highest priority in SA Animal Welfare, they deserve any support you can give – animalman)
Grrrrreetings
As we unravel the tinsel from the tree and take our dogs for longer walks to work off the excess Christmas kilograms, we welcome you to a whole New Year and decade! 2011 is going to be a record-breaking year for us as we already have plans in place for our first 2 (of many) mass sterilisations – 17, 18 and 19 January 2011 will see us embark upon a whopping 3 days of spaying and neutering! We will then infiltrate the townships again on 9 February 2011 in a fevered effort to prevent the birth of as many unwanted dogs and cats as possible as we strive to achieve our goal of 2011 sterilisations in the year 2011! (Volunteers Welcome!)
We also reflect back on a very successful 2010 and can summarise the year gone by as follows:
HAPPILY RE-HOMED: 222 dogs , pups and a few kittens! (bringing our total happy homings figure to a grand 498 and counting!)
SAFELY STERILISED: 700 township dogs (this excludes the dogs we have re-homed or sterilised in foster care) – bringing our grand total of township sterilisations to 1485.
DIPPED, DE-WORMED, VACCINATED AND TREATED FOR WOUNDS AND INJURIES: Approximately 250 township dogs and cats
SUFFERING BROUGHT TO AN END: 25 (may they RIP).
We also filled many hungry tummies and swapped Rogz collars for crude chains. We didn’t get as many kennels out there as we would have liked, due to transport / delivery logistics. We would love to provide more shelter from the elements for the township dogs this year and appeal for assistance in collecting and delivering kennels to the needy.
We will also be focusing our efforts on making MASU (Mobile Animal Sterilisation Unit) a reality and for this we need funds, funds and more funds. MASU will circumnavigate the Peninsula (and be of benefit to all the animal rescue organisations) and sterilise up to 80 dogs a day, 5 days a week, 12 months out of the year. We have the staff, the expertise, the medical equipment and the skills at our disposal but without the funds to get it (and keep it) on the road, it remains a leg-twitching puppy-pie-in-the-sky-dream. Watchdog this space for info on upcoming “fun”raising initiatives in the “pup”line. Purchasing your very own copy of our 2011 Brak Beauty Calendar will also help further our goals, so if an African Tails calendar does not yet adorn your wall – please order one online without delay: www.africantails.co.za “online shop”.
We are also looking for a buyer for our donated Isuzu KB250 1997 model 4×4. It does need some work (clutch, rust, electrics) and are open to receiving any offers – the proceeds of which will go into our sterilisation kitty.
