MIKA: THE MYSTERY…
Jarred and Simone are animal lovers who have a particular affection for Bull Terriers, those misunderstood, wonderfully robust and loyal dogs that are loved by so many. They cared so much about them that they founded an organisation called Bull Terrier Rescue.
When they received a call in the beginning of September 2010 from Rene of AACL (Animal Anti-Cruelty League) in Cape Town, saying that they had an aggressive Bull Terrier that the AACL staff members were too afraid to handle, they responded by taking Mika in.
Below: Mika 2 days before she was removed from Jarred and Simone’s custody.
Jarred takes up the story:
“On 16/17 October we took Mika to a show, something we often do when having a Bullie Rescue Stand because it is a great socializing tool for rescue dogs. They were approached by Mr Leonard Erasmus who was sure that Mika was his dog, previously sold to a “Rasta” (later found to be a Mr Kleynhans)
The breeders with Erasmus (Faeez Ebrahim, Thelma Venter, Glen Julius) were all very excited at the prospect of breeding with Mika and were all discussing bringing colour into their lines. They all motivated Mr Erasmus to get Mika back and we were subjected to verbal abuse from the breeders. We told the breeders to call the AACL and discuss the matter with Rene as the dog was legally in custody and control of the AACL. It was clear to us that Mr Erasmus had NO intention of handing this dog back to Kleynhans. He was going to keep Mika to breed and show with.
On 18 October 2010, Mika was spayed at the AACL. The breeders in question seem to think this was done out of spite but nobody has any influence over when the AACL spay dogs. They have hundreds of dogs to spay and on average there is a 2 week wait to have a Rescue spayed. She came on heat shortly after she arrived which also delayed the process.
On 1 February 2010, we received an email from Kleynhans as an interested adopter. In his mail he stated that he tried to locate our premises but could not find a BTRI shelter at the location listed in the mail. Simone replied by telling him the reasons why we did not disclose our location and asked him to complete an adoption form for us to start the application process.. Why was he so intent on knowing our address? Why did he not disclose his real identity at the time?
On 21 March 2011: Whilst on route to a friend’s dog’s memorial in Sea Point, I received a frantic call from a fellow rescue member. The advised that Kleynhans and his wife had arrived at her home with Captain Klein and 2 uniformed officers demanding our address.
She refused to disclose our address & asked on what grounds Captain Klein was there & why he wanted our address. He threatened to arrest her if she did not comply. He was just about ready to load her in the van when she asked him to call Rene from AACL as the dog legally belonged to them and was in our foster custody only.
Captain Klein then called Rene and harassed her (she is also lodging a complaint regarding this). She refused to give our home address. Captain Klein then contacted me to advise of his intentions to come to our home to confiscate Mika as we have been accused of stealing her by Mr Kleynhans.
When I asked on what grounds he refused to tell me. I rushed home, and called Simone’s dad in the interim to advise of the situation and asked him to please come to our home to be with Simone (she was home alone at the time) and to help us with Captain Klein (we have no clue when it comes to police procedures). I feared Captain Klein would arrive at our place whilst Simone was alone. Simone’s dad (Mr Norman) is a retired police Captain, he served in the SAPS for 32 years.
Mr Norman then called Captain Klein to find out what the grounds were for coming to confiscate Mika. He quoted case number MAS 1/11/2010. Mr Norman was able to determine that the case contents stated that two boys climbed over Mr Kleynhans wall around 8/9 August 2010 and stole his dog. The case was closed on 22/11/2010. Mr Norman advised that it could have been due to lack of evidence – we made a note to find out why the case was archived. We later discovered that the actual case officer of MAS 1/11/2010 later refused to have any further dealings with Mr Kleynhans due to his bogus stories. This was the reason for the case being archived.
When Captain Klein arrived (with Kleynhans in tow) he was very aggressive from the beginning. He practically barged through the door and brought two uniformed Kraaifontein officers along. Captain Klein started by saying “Where is the dog”, I’m here to take the dog”. When asked again by Mr Norman on what grounds, Captain Klein told Mr Norman to keep quiet as he had no business with him. I then asked on what grounds and that’s when he started reading me my rights. We had called Mark from the AACL in the interim and he somehow managed to get Captain Klein to listen to him. They left our home and continued their conversation outside. Captain Klein told us to be available for court the following day as he was walking out.
23 March 2011 – We took time off work and waited for a call from Captain Klein. When no call came went down to the Bellville Station and were eventually able to speak to Captain Klein’s immediate superior. He advised that the actual case officer of MAS 1/11/2010 later refused to have any further dealings with Mr Kleynhans due his bogus stories.
30 March 2011 – We called the Bellville Police Station to obtain a copy of the case file. As we were implicated in the case we had every right to view the contents. When calling Captain Klein to request this, he advised that he was not allowed to supply this info until such time that the case was settled by the court. Simone then tried a different extension and was able to reach another officer. When Simone explained who we were, this officer seemed to know exactly who we were and what the case was about. She asked Simone what we were planning to do about the case as she would be very unhappy if it was her. She went as far as suggesting that we contact the Provincial Officers to lodge a complaint – she asked Simone to please not mention her name as she stood the chance of being victimized if they found out she disclosed the info to us.
TO DATE no one has taken a statement from Simone & I.
31 March 2011 – On this day we were told that Mika is now in the custody of Mr Kleynhans. She is now being kept at his premises in Belhar. We are very disappointed in Rene from the AACL for not advising us of this. Just the day before Carole Sheratt visited the AACL and asked to just sit with Mika, just so Mika could have some human affection. In response to this Rene advised that no one was able to see Mika due to the pending police investigation. That was a blatant lie from Rene – we just continue to be disappointed by the people we thought we could trust. Surely she could at least have told us that Mika was no longer in their (AACL) custody?
Simone spoke to a third officer on this day – he also seemed to know exactly which case she was referring to. He was intent on being neutral and asked Simone where she got his name from? He seemed to be concerned that Simone mentioned his name in connection to the case. He asked Simone right out if she had received the required answers or necessary service from him, as if he was intent on saying the right thing to not be implicated in this case.
Why do we get the feeling that the good cops are trying to help us as far as they can but fear saying too much in case they are implicated and victimized by senior officers because of this?
We apparently have to complete some access to information form, the form then has to be approved by the State Prosecutor and only if approved we will be able to obtain or view the case contents.”
Several questions arise from reflecting on these events:
- How did Kleynhans prove that he was the legitimate owner of Mika, since he also claimed to be the owner of Edge, another Bull Terrier advertised by Animal Welfare PE. Since Mika was not chipped, what evidence did Kleynhans provide that this was his dog? Did AACL just submit to pressure from the police? Is it possible that this is a strategy by Klenyhans to get dogs from welfare organisations for his own purposes? Is Kleynhans sourcing dogs for dogfighting syndicates?
- Why had Erasmus sell Mika to someone in an area well known for dog fighting? There are certain areas within Cape Town where you just do not place a Bull Terrier or Pit Bull, due to the risks of them landing up in dogfighting syndicates. No reputable breeder would sell a dog to someone in an area well known for dog fighting. No reputable breeder would breed with a human aggressive stray bull terrier. And if she meant so much to him (Erasmus) as claimed, why was there no attempt from his side to try and locate her?
- Is it standard police procedure to confiscate a dog from a home at 20:00 in the evening and hand it to the complainant without proof that the complainant is the owner? Should the dog not have been placed with the AACL until the dispute was resolved? Should the matter not have been referred toi a court of law or at least arbitration rather than the heavy-handed approach of the police who seem to be prejudiced in this case?
- Is it police procedure to barge into someone’s home threatening to arrest them without so much as a case file, never mind a warrant? What court case was Captain Klein referring to? It never happened, so why did he request that Jarred and Simone take time off work to be present in court?
- From what we understand Captain Klein is in the Fraud Division - he investigates fraud cases. Why then did he dedicate so much time to a Theft case? What is the relationship between Klein and Kleynhans?
Jarred and Simone are seeking legal advice, and we will do our best to get the local authorities, including the ICD (Independent Complaints Directorate), to investigate these affairs.

Just a note to those following this Blog: our friend Junky, whom we no know to be Kleynhans himself, has threatened me personally in another comment which I have not published. I am reserving the right to proceed with criminal litigation against Mr Kleynhans.
By the way, the details have been forwarded to the ICD (Independent Complaints Directorate), the local SPCA, and various Government officials… To achieved what. Legally its not there dog. Erasmus/ Kleynhans got plenty of proof.

Simone the fact that you and your boyfriend(Jarred) was told at a show who the dog belong to, is already enough. Why did’nt you get the address and locate the owners, is that not what Rescue’s do. If your child got missing or stolen,would you not want your child back. You will be devastated. The dog was not even advertised in a local paper or internet. Mr. Erasmus and Kleynhans did phoned all around Peninsula, and has make use of all necessary resources

Im happy that Kleynhans got his dog back. I just feel very sad for you and your (Husband). I also heard via the grapevine the dog is doing fantastic interacting very well with other dogs. and was never aggressive with humans.
When i child is born he/she knows who their mother is. its called instinct. I was with Mark Levendal,Cap Klein and Rene and Kleynhans when he had to identify his dog. His dog went mad when she saw him. She almost jumped the fences.You can ask Rene for a vidoe clip i think she will provide you. So a dogs loyalty lies by its owner who raised her.
I think you problem is you are so Angry and Frastrated that you do not have the satisfacation of having somebody else’s dog.

Let me start off by offering some advice to Junky Crapyard who is too much of a coward to disclose his real identity – when sending an email i would strongly suggest that you make sure you have the facts, secondly you REALLY need to get someone to help you with your spelling and grammer. Nobody is going to take your seriously if you are not even capable of drafting a professional/legible email.
Your accusation that we are lying Cheathers (its actually CHEATERS fyi): We legally obtained Mika from the AACL. We did not hide her – we took her to shows. With regard to the boys jumping over the fence – this is what the case file states BUT Mr Kleynhans and his breeder friends are all trying to create tear jerker moments by stating that Mika was stolen whilst Mrs Kleynhans was robbed at gunpoint at their home. So what is it now? Was the dog stolen by two boys who jumped a fence or was she stolen whilst Mrs Kleynhans was held up at their home? Hmmmm, you seem like the lying cheaters in this instance i think.
Re the original case being closed: I had a good laugh at your statement that the case was probably closed due to my dad’s influence. We had no idea there was a case opened – which is actually MAS1/11/2010 and not MAS5/11/2010 as you stated. We only heard about the case being opened when the police AND KLEYNHANS came to our home on 21 March 2011 at 20:00 (5 MONTHS LATER AND ON HUMAN RIGHTS DAY) to remove Mika from our custody. How then Mr Junky Crapyard could my father have influenced the investigating officer then?! Did we magically tap into Mr Kleynhan’s brain in November 2010 to determine he opened a case?! Not knowing Kleynhans from a bar of soap at that?! Another thing to note is that my dad is a retired cop and has no influence over the police. Your have the perfect alias because you like to talk CRAP.
Re the show: Yes, we were told who’s dog it was. We were told by Mr Erasmus that it was his dog. We were also told by Mr Erasmus (breeder) that he sold the dog to a Rasta in Bellville South and this his house looked OK to Erasmus at first. Erasmus also told us that Kleynhans only told him that his (kleynhans) dog was stolen when he (Erasmus) called Kleynhans around 20 September 2010 to advise of his intentions to show Mika. Mr Erasmus then continued to tell us that Kleynhans still owed him money for Mika and thats why he (Erasmus) was still in possession of her papers. He (Erasmus) also said that Kleynhans avoided his calls since his initial contact with Kleynhans on 20 September 2010 and that he (Erasmus) had the suspicion that Kleynhans was busy with shady things due to avoiding his (Erasmus) calls.
Now to your racial card you love to play: What you lot are to dense to realise is that the only way we would know who Erasmus sold the dog to and where this person lived would be if we were told by Erasmus himself. Again – we do possess psychic powers to be able to tap into Erasmus’s brain to determine to who and when he sold the dog. We did not label Kleynhans as a Rasta or dream up he came from Bellville South – WE GOT THIS INFO FROM ERASMUS. We also had no other way to refer to him but rasta because Erasmus called him that – we had no other name to refer to! He is now Mr Kleynhans & no longer Rasta as we actually have a name for him now!!!!!!
Another correction – Mika was spayed on 18 OCTOBER 2010 we have enough to prove this as her spaying date.
Yes, Erasmus did call Rene but to plead with her not to spay Mika so he (erasmus) COULD TAKE MIKA BACK AND BREED AND SHOW WITH HER. BREED WITH A STRAY, AGGRESSIVE, EMOTIONALLY DAMAGED RESCUE BULL TERRIER. Sjoe – must be a really awesome breeder with fantastic ethics hey?!
And yes, we did investigate the possibility of obtaining her papers because we wanted good old fashioned proof of who the breeder was. Not because we wanted to breed with her but because we wanted to report the breeder to Kusa. Because we wanted answers with regard to her condition when she was found. How she landed up there, who was reponsible for her neglect, why her “owner” never made any attempts to find her AND THE LIST GOES ON.
You know how you and your clan operate (and we know too) we make sure our i’s are dotted and our t’s are crossed when we lodge enquiries or complaints. If we didnt have her papers in this case the breeder would simply deny owning or breeding her. Thats how you guys roll and we’ve come to know how to counter that LOL.
You, a fellow breeder, Kleyhans and Captain Klein are the racist one’s – you forget that Kleynhans stood outside our house shouting in full view of neighbours that us “whities” were in cahoots with the AACL and that us “fokken whities” think we can get away with anything. The AACL officer who we love due to his good heart is a coloured man by the way……us racist – i think not!! Oh, before i forget… Kleynhans also shouted “as hulle my fokken hond wil he moet hulle my betaal”. Kleynhans must love his dog very much if he is willing to sell her for money right?!!!!
Another very important thing i think EVERYONE involved in this prefer to forget – Erasmus had no intention of giving that dog back to Kleynhans. HE WAS PLANNING TO KEEP MIKA FOR HIMSELF BUT LOST INTEREST WHEN SHE WAS SPAYED. He (Erasmus) had nothing good to say about Kleynhans. And a fellow breeder confirmed to Kleynhans that Erasmus had NO intention of handing the dog back to him (Kleynhans).
Also – if Kleynhans or Erasmus were so distressed about Mika being stolen why did they not make any efforts to find Mika?! The case file states the dog was stolen in August 2010 but you only opened a case on 1 November 2010?! Is this the actions of a desperate man trying to locate his stolen dog?! Lol, NO IT IS NOT.
Yes, Mika might now be in your custody but WE rescued her. WE took her off the street and made it ALL BETTER FOR HER. HER HEART WILL ALWAYS BELONG TO US. HER LOYALTY WILL ALWAYS BE TOWARDS US. YOU WILL NEVER HAVE THE BOND WITH THAT ANIMAL WE HAVE. YOU WILL NEVER HAVE THAT SATISFACTION!!!!!!!! AND YOU WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO CHANGE THAT OR TAKE THAT AWAY FROM US. YOU ACCEPT THAT MY “FRIEND”. By the way – how are things between Kleynhans and Mika? News via the grapevine is that she is acting out quite a bit – that there are some concerns that she may bite Kleynhans?……She must be REALLY COMFY in Kleynhan’s home if she is acting like that right?………There was never a threat of her biting us……..She is merey a pet in Kleynhan’s home – Kleynhans will never “own” her in the true sense of owning an animal. If you knew dogs you would know that they express unhappiness by acting out, by displaying unacceptable behaviour.
Your stament that Kleynhans had to take HIM to the vet: Do you know the difference between a male and female? because Mika is a HER (a girl so you would refer to her as a SHE). What utter BS re her condition – She was a happy, healthy girl the day she left us. We’ve provided photo’s taken mere days before she was taken – even a idiot can see just how healthy she was. The only thing we were guitly of was giving into her treat whims. She was a tad bit overweight because of that. So bad condition?! Think again.
To your Lil Miss – I would really be careful how you label people. I am in no means a little miss – i am an adult just as you are and you will treat me with respect. I might be younger but that clearly doesnt count because although i am younger i am able to express myself in a proper manner (your grammer and spelling really needs some work – YOU BEING BIG MAN & ALL). You reasoning is irrational and based on YOUR PERSONAL VIEWS and not facts as in our case. You instead seem like a “little man” – your conduct sure as hell supports this statement. You can only wish to possess the characteristics of this little miss – maybe you can even learn from me: Learn how to be honest, to have integrity, to have good ethics, to be selfless & to possess a good MORAL CODE.
Your stolen property statement – we were legally and righfully in possession of Mika so NOPE you had no grounds to arrest Jarred. Someone obviously coached you folks on this – if you are not able to spell you are sure as hell in no way capable of knowing the how the law works. Well im sorry to say that this person was wrong – the law doesnt work this way. We’ve had many experts confirm this to us.
We received no email from Shanaaz’s friend (whoever shanaaz is). I have to ask why you lot always have to approach us via, via. Why Kleynhans sent us a mail posing as an interested adopter fishing for our home address? Why not just contact us directly? Hardly conduct of honest people……..SLY, SLY, SLY!

Yes, we are a SELFLESS rescue group and we are proud to be at that.
Do you have ANY IDEA what the meaning of SELFLESS is?! Let “little miss” correct you by giving you the correct meaning of selfless:
SELFLESS can be described as: “Having, exhibiting, or motivated by no concern for oneself”; unselfish OR “having little concern for one’s own interests”.
If you are still a tad bit confused here are some adjectives (descriptive words) to help better understand the word: Unselfish, generous, self-sacrificing, self-denying.
I think a rescue group deemed as selfless is a wonderful rescue group! I would be very concerned if they didnt possess or act out of selflessness. Also, you cannot use selfless & selfish in one sentence because then it would be seen as a contradiction (meaning: logical incompatibility between two or more propositions).
So LOL all you want – laughter is an awesome “cure” for many things but beware of LOL’ing too much want van lekker lag kom lekker huil ook.
PLEASE NOTE: For those of you who do not personally know me or J – this is not the way we choose to respond to these people but unfortunately responding in a civil manner doesnt work. It seems one needs to stoop down to their level in order for them to better understand, which is what i have tried to do in this mail. They dont understand nice or respectful. Jarred ans simone knew who’s dog it was why didnt they just give it back. they are lying cheathers that wanna make them look good in the eyes of the public. The initial case was closed due to the fact that the previous Investigating officer was lacking in important evidence that was mention in the statement of sourcefull witness and did not follow up on it ” Prob cause he was told not to investigate it futher by his senior Who then Knew Jarred, who’s name is mention in the statement of 05/11/2010,
Yes you guys did spitefull spayed Kleynhans dog. Because you had it for a long while. And when the dog was spotted on the show you guys were told who’s dog it was, and by then the dog was’nt spayed yet.
According records of Aacl in Epping the dog were only spayed in November. So what does this tell you. According a source you guys were looking for the registration papers so that you can breed with the dog.
You wanna try and be so inocent, you knew who the owner was. Why not doing the right thing and give the peoples belonings back. Accept it its over. The dog has become the subject of theft. So that means its stolen property.Any person thats in the possesion of stollen property can be arrested aswell as the property
The police officer acted on an instruction of higher authority not out of his own capacity

This is an absolute disgrace! Besides the human abuse experienced by Jarred, Simone and Mr Norman, what of the poor dog, Mika?
I hope that they will continue this fight until they get answers and know that this animal is in a loving home where she belongs.
