Hope for Homeless Animals

A Light in the Darkness for Homeless Animals in South Africa

Port Elizabeth’s Animal Angel

(Ellen Dunning is a very special person. When you read below you will understand why I say that an investment in her work is worth much more than one of the huge shelters where the sheer size of the facility and the numbers coming in result in animals’ needs being compromised. Even if it’s just R50, please help Ellen. These small ventures are the future of real animal welfare.)

From Ellen’s daughter Sharon:

Ellen does feeding both in Walmer Township as well as daily at the pound (cleaning cages etc), she arranges for as many sterilisations as we can at Southern Cross, these are the dogs from Walmer Township, she dips and arranges for treatment for injured and abused animals in Walmer Township, she also educates so much it is frightening to see what she has actually achieved.  She has worked along Marine Drive for the past 30 years rescuing / treating / feeding capturing feral cats to the point where she has managed to achieve a respect from the bush dwellers and township people that is wonderful to see. She has rescued and homed more animals than I can mention.

Ellen and I went down to the beachfront to do Marine Drive on one Sunday Morning and 3 youngsters from Walmer Township actually stopped her to say hello and show her their dog – needless to say their dog was loved and well fed. Most of the people who know her in the Township call her Granny.

Ellen strongly appeals to them to look after their animals, where she has come across chained animals she gives them collars and leads and shows them how to look after them, she has helped with fencing where possible and we have given out as many kennels as we could get our hands on. She has provided them with food bowls / water bowls and shown them their dogs need clean water and food daily.  She does checks to see that the animals are being provided with food and water and has tried to help as many animals as possible.

Ellen cooks daily for the animals when she can ( has rice / meat) to cook with and an article that was published a number of years ago called her the “Animals Angel” well according to my 3 rescues at home this is exactly what she is.

——————————————————————————————————

Ellen is taking a beating financially and her account is so high for the spaying of dogs and cats that Southern Cross can no longer do spays for her. I saw the album of photo’s of the dogs in the squatter camps and the poorest of the poor areas and it brought tears to my eyes, the dogs are in such terrible shape. Some are pedigree dogs dumped with domestic workers. All are desperate to survive.

——————————————————————————————————

Ellen is an elderly lady who has spent all her life and savings on caring for the dogs and cats in the underprivileged areas. Other organizations are probably better known, being Save a Pet, Animal Welfare, Cat Care, SPCA etc and get donations from Companies and the Public. Ellen is carrying on her work daily, but her vehicle needs a service, tyres, petrol costs, the cost of the food, the medication and dips she provides on site to the animals. Southern Cross has been collecting animal food & rice for her but it’s not enough to sustain her work.

Domestic Animal Care is currently in need of:

  1. Petrol or funds to buy petrol
  2. Dog and cat pellets
  3. Meat and food scraps for the animals which are fed daily
  4. Funds for sterilizations
  5. Funds for dips for mange.
