A Light in the Darkness for Homeless Animals in South Africa

US Marines/SANDF Spayathon

It was the start of a busy week-long spayathon on Saturday.  With state of the art equipment, eye candy in uniform (!) and things being run with military precision, the total number of sterilisations for the weekend was 51.  These dogs have never been so well-treated, with no less than 5 injections during recovery – everything from Vitamins, anti-biotics and painkillers to anaesthetic-antidote!

This wonderful outreach to the Kwanobuhle and Rosedale communities is a combined operation initiated by the US Navy and being executed by the US Marines and SANDF in conjunction with UItenhage SPCA and all the PE animal societies.  The sterilisations in Kwanobuhle will continue until Wednesday, when we will transfer to Rosedale until Sunday.

Owners were encouraged to learn about post-op care and to sit with their own animals and courtesy of your many wonderful donations, we were able to discharge every animal with a blanket, pellets and one of our colleads which we have made by our stunning team, under the leadership of Sarie Marais.  What a pleasure it was to have this anaesthetic-antidote, as we could ensure that  all the animals were well on their way to full recovery, before discharging them.  It was plain-sailing from our side, thanks to the efficiency of Ros Lourens who organised all the wonderful volunteers, Koos of Uitenhage SPCA who made sure that everything was in place and to Glen and Hilary who have ensured that all the daily blankets, pellets and colleads are ready for distribution.

Day 1:  20 dogs

Day 2:  31 Animals

Day 3:  31 Animals

Day 4:  50 Dogs and 3 cats

This was in addition to the treatment clinic and the sterilisation of donkeys and horses!  Quite a learning curve for all!

Many thanks for the response to my appeal for extra food for the guys. You have all been fantastic and have shown some true South African hospitality.  As you will see from the pics, all very well received!  Our grateful thanks to Cassies, who are providing the meal today.  Glen will make a potjie on one of the days, as we have had lovely donations of veg for the pot!

We are still in need of extra blankets.  Stephne from Watershed very kindly donated R1000 and Glen is currently out there purchasing blankets, as we had literally run out of them.  Stephne, what a lifesaver for those that cannot speak for themselves.  Thank you.  They are so cold when they come out from under anaesthetic and to be discharged in their own blanket is a great blessing.

In the pics – some hungry soldiers, Glen in action with the sharps bin, owners and doggies all getting drowsy and Koos, on the left – the main “man” of the Uitenhage SPCA, who has put so much in place.

Everything has been running very smoothly thanks to Ros Lourens and her team of volunteers who gather at Glen’s house on a daily basis.  What a pleasure to see everyone working together to make a difference in these two townships.  Thank you.

Will keep the news coming.

Kind regards and thanks
