Cluny Animal Trust
The Cluny Animal Trust (IT69/2011) was formed in February 2011 to serve the needs of animals owned by the indigent in the Eastern Free State. The aim is to end the needless suffering of these animals, treating them and educating their owners.
This is not a wealthy area and therefore many animals, dogs, cats, horses, livestock, never get the veterinary care they need.
The ongoing care of animals is a major part of our work. Local vet, Dr Katherine Barker, started a sterilisation programme for animals of the indigent in 2004. Up until the end of 2010, Dr Barker had completed 140 sterilisations, 412 vaccinations, numerous de-wormings and preventative treatments. In addition Dr Barker has dealt with injuries suffered by animals, such as wounds incurred by snares, animal and snake bites, broken bones caused by vehicle strikes, predator attacks etc. Illnesses such as distemper, parvo virus and biliary have been encountered amongst the animals of those too poor or ignorant to provide the necessary protection for their animals.
The need to continue and expand this work is enormous.
Dr Barker’s small clinic is based in Fouriesburg, with consulting rooms in Clarens. Because she helps animals over such a large area, some animals cannot receive the surgery or hospitalisation that they require, because their owners do not have the means to transport them to the consulting rooms.
The Cluny Animal Trust urgently requires a mobile clinic, a truck big enough to house a mobile operating theatre. A great number of animals’ suffering would be ended with the existence of a mobile clinic. Many animal lives could be saved. We would also like to establish an animal hospital for those patients requiring hospitalisation.
Apart from financial contributions, we need assistance with many elements to enrich the lives of the animals we treat. We will gratefully accept blankets, bowls, collars, leads, harnesses, animal shelters, pet food, horse feed, veterinary supplies , hot water bottles, beanbag hotties, materials with which we can educate the owners of the animals we help, cellphones for our contacts in the townships to reach us, a GPS navigation system to help us find our patients…the list is endless!
Thank you for your attention.
