Homes For the Elderly - Candice Collins, Hopeful Homer

I would like to share a story with anyone who has ever considered or turned down taking in an older dog.
About 8 months ago I attended a border collie rescue fund raiser, at which they had a few older dogs pictures displayed to try and find them homes. I looked at their sad and worn faces and thought to myself "why adopt an old dog when you'll just get attached to see it end its days in your home a short while later"

A few weeks later I decided I would like to get involved in fostering and rescuing dogs, so I got hold of Wolfshaven and sure enough there was a dog who was in need of a temporary home while the shelter tried to place him permanently.

That was when I met Scotty! A thoroughbred Scottish Terrier with a heart of gold. And as fate had it, he was 8 years old already (an older dog) just like one of the border collies I had seen in pictures a few weeks prior.

Scotty came into our lives with a bang ,his boundless energy and passion for people was a true inspiration. He had a few bad habits, which in the end were more amusing than anything else, but he brought a source of wisdom and love into our home that we had never seen in our younger dogs.

The few weeks we were privileged to have him in our lives made me ashamed of the way I had shunned the thought of making space in my home for an older dog. Many people I have discussed the issue with have all said the same thing to me. "We can't fall in love with a dog who won't be around very long".
But is it not better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all?
