Looking for a Puppy?
Everybody loves a puppy - their cute
behaviour, that strange smell that makes them all the more
appealing, their innocent looks...
And of course it's great for kids to grow up
with animals, especially when a dog is a child's companion in
their formative years. Much may be learnt from animals, and the
bonding that takes place from both sides is an important phase
of learning about the world. It's wonderful to see a child grow
up with an appreciation and respect for other creatures, and it
is something which will never leave them, creating a sense of
responsibility for another life.
In many cases, however, the charm of the
puppy wears off, and soon they are no longer 'cute' and cuddly,
but large and a 'handful' and the novelty wears off, and before
long the puppy has become a lot of effort and expense. When this
happens, sometimes people do things that make us ashamed to be
human.
Some dogs are left in the yard when their
owners move. In other cases, they are taken to a remote place
and merely abandoned. Others land up in Puppy Mills, where they
become part of the puppy-producing and distributing network for
pet shops and newspaper hawkers. In what is often the worst case scenario,
they are taken to the local shelter, where they will live
another ten days unless they are lucky and find a home before then.
There are more animals than homes...
Every time another dog or cat is bred by
those who care more about money than life, and that dog or cat finds a home, a
shelter animal is passed by, and their future is decided by
the needle...
