PROPERTY CHECK CRITERIA

FOR PUPPIES

POOLS
Pups can only be homed to a property with a pool if it is covered or inaccessible to pups by means of fence/wall or separate garden, or has an approved cover.

Does property have a pool? Yes No
Is pool covered or fenced Yes No

If pool is open and accessible, the home must commit to installing some form of protection in the form of fencing or cover. This must be done prior to the pup being homed there.

PALISADE FENCING AND GATES

If property has palisade fencing or gates, or sliding gates, one needs to be aware of the gaps in the case of pups.
In these instances, wire fencing needs to be erected prior to pup being homed.
Gaps between walls and sliding gates – each case needs to be addressed accordingly, generally a pole embedded into the ground sometimes helps, but each case must be broached independently for solutions.

GENERAL RULES FOR PROPERTY CHECKS

Are walls/fencing of sufficient height?
Are gates of sufficient height?
Are there gaps under the walls?
Is there a wall or fence dividing neighbouring properties? If a fence, ascertain if there are dogs on the other side, fighting could be an issue between a fence.
Is property clean, neat and tidy?
Grass must be kept short.
Are there existing pets, if yes, what condition are the dogs in and are they happy around the family and workers?
Ask to be shown the sleeping quarters/arrangements for dogs.
If the dogs are to sleep outside, ask to be shown kennels or shelter, if no existing kennel, owner must provide kennel before dog can be homed.
In the case of dogs sleeping outside, there are now many areas that are classified as high risk due to poisoning, ensure that you are familiar with the area you are homing to, if in doubt please contact one of the animal rescue workers in that area.
If the dogs will have access to the main gate, discuss with the potential owner how they will police entrance and exit, specifically in cases with electric gates which often malfunction, leaving any dog free to roam.
Listen to the potential owners, if they are a good home, they will talk about their existing pets.
Ascertain if they have an existing vet, it is essential that people know where the closest vet is to them in the case of an emergency.
Ask what the arrangements will be when the family are away on vacation or business.

When in doubt, ask yourself would you home one of your own pets to this potential owner!!!
Select, Copy and Paste the above into a draft email, make your own changes, and you're ready to roll! If you have registered as a Homer, you will get this in your email too!
